Jonathan Talbot: "Monument à l'Artiste Inconnu" (Monument to the Unknown Artist), Installation, 2008


Déclaration de l'Artiste : « Cette oeuvre a été conçue à Bruxelles en Belgique au mois d'avril 2008 et est née à Warwick, NY, USA le mois suivant. Elle a été exposée pour la première fois à la Galerie Flux d'Art à Norwalk, CT USA au mois de juin 2008. Les papiers sur les murs sont des copies agrandies de quelques-unes des six mille cinqs cent pages d'un livre encyclopédique qui recense les artistes du monde entier. Chaque page reprend les informations sur au moins quarante ou cinquante artistes. Donc le livre énumère approximativement 300.000 artistes. Le chevalet, les sandales, les pinceaux, la palette, la toile et le parasol sont tous grandeur nature. »

Ce travail est, en partie, le résultat de mes conversations avec les artistes belges Josiane Debatisse et Frédéric Thiry. Ma gratitude à eux et à leurs familles pour m'avoir accueilli en Belgique et m'avoir guidé dans mes explorations «francophonique» de Bruxelles et de l'art.

Artist's Statement: "This work was conceived in Brussels, Belgium in April of 2008 and was born in Warwick, NY, USA the following month. It was first exhibited at the Flow of Art Gallery in Norwalk, CT USA in June of 2008. The papers on the walls are enlarged copies of just a few of the more than six thousand five hundred pages in an encyclopedic multi-volume book providing information about the artists of the world. Each page contains, on the average, information about forty or fifty artists. The book, therefor, lists approximately 300,000 artists. The easel, the sandals, the brushes, the palette, the canvas and the umbrella are all life-sized."

This work is, in part, the result of my conversations with Belgian artists Frédéric Thiry and Josaine Debatisse. My thanks to them and their families for welcoming me to Belgium and guiding me in my "francophonic" explorations of both Brussels and art.
