Workshop Reviews and Comments
New York

The following letter from Steven Specht, a participant in a 2009 workshop held in the artist's studio in Warwick, NY, has been slightly abbreviated to remove some personal notes. Reprinted with permission.

Dear Jonathan,

WOW! I want to express my sincere and complete gratitude for all that I learned from you at this weekend's workshop. I drove all the way home last night with no music on in the car. I do that when I have a lot on my mind. And I certainly had A LOT on my mind after the workshop. I was on cloud nine all the way home! It's difficult for me to express my feelings without apparent hyperbole. Perhaps an analogy of how I was feeling before the workshop might be the way someone who wants to play beautiful music but who has arthritis so bad that they have a difficult time playing might feel. I feel like my arthritis has been taken away; so now I can "play"! Of course Hellen Keller comes to mind too (remember... the apparent hyperbole?). I feel like Hellen Keller must have felt when she learned that she could finally communicate with others. I've been wanting to pursue my artistic ideas by means of collage and mixed media for quite a while now. But I have had such a hard time "working through" the variously-effective self-taught techniques. YOU have given me the gift to now be able to pursue my art more directly with less of the hassle of the mechanical processes. Now I can direct my focus on the artistic process.

Thank you for your generosity, your patience, and your inspiration!

Sincerely,

Steven M. Specht, Ph.D.
