Artist’s Encounter with Duchamp Study Inspires New Works

JONATHAN TALBOT: VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY MARCEL DUCHAMP and other works –
June 6-28, 2008 – Solo Exhibition at the Flow of Art Gallery in Norwalk, Connecticut
Norwalk, Conn., May 28, 2008— In the 1930’s, the artist Marcel Duchamp gave his friend, art critic Henry McBride, a study for “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even“— a Duchamp masterpiece also known as “The Large Glass.” This study, made of copper, wire and other materials, has remained in the collection of The Henry McBride Foundation and has never been publicly exhibited.
In 2007, while discussing his solo exhibit in 2008 at The Flow of Art Gallery, internationally known painter and collage artist Jonathan Talbot was shown the Duchamp study by gallery co-owner Michael Spizzirri, who is also a Director of the Foundation.
“My encounter with the McBride Foundation’s Marcel Duchamp study for “La mariée mis à nu par ses célibataires, même” (“The Large Glass”) has inspired a number of works in my upcoming exhibition at the Flow of Art Gallery,” said Talbot in a recent interview. “These works explore the possibilities of using new visual language to discuss preexisting art and, at the same time, celebrate the tradition of using preexisting visual language to make new artistic statements.”
The Duchamp study, along with the works it has inspired, will be included in JONATHAN TALBOT: VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY MARCEL DUCHAMP and other works which opens on June 6th and will continue through June 28th.
The works of artist Jonathan Talbot have been exhibited at The National Academy and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, have represented the U.S. overseas in exhibitions sponsored by the State Department and the Smithsonian Institution, and are included in museum collections in U.S. and Europe. His works are currently also on display in “Art Collage,” an exhibit in Brussels, Belgium.Talbot's works include oils, watercolors, etchings, collages, and multi-dimensional collage-constructions. Among the public collections holding Talbot works are The Newark Museum, The Smith College Museum, The Everhart Museum, The Byer Museum, The Free Library of Philadelphia, The San Francisco Academy of Art, Fairleigh Dickinson University, The Provincetown Historical Society, and the Toronto Central Library.
Talbot maintains his studio in Warwick, NY where he lives with his wife Marsha.
The opening reception for this exhibit will be on Friday, June 6th from 6 to 9 pm. The Flow of Art Gallery, 16 River Street in Norwalk, is open Wed. & Thurs. 10 am – 5pm, Friday 10am – 8pm, Saturday 11am – 5pm and Sunday 12 noon – 5pm. Other hours may be arranged by appointment. Call 203-838-0500.
