SAILING DAYS

My sailing experiences during the 50s and 60s became the basis for many nautical paintings and collages. This picture shows the Chauve Souris (It means "bat" in French), an Alden running-backstay schooner on which I learned to sail on the waters around Martha's Vineyard in the 1950s. This picture, taken around 1925, shows her gaff rigged but by the time I got to know her she had been re-rigged marconi style. The Chauve Souris was owned by noted photographer Hans Van Nes who often let his oldest sons Hans and Gordon, then aged 16 and 17, take the boat out even when he was not aboard. Hans and Gordon were generous enough to include me in their crew.
